When Should Kids Get Their First Eye Exam?

We recommend a comprehensive eye exam by age 3, earlier if there are signs of vision trouble. Kids don’t always know how to explain what they’re seeing, so our role is to help detect issues early, before they interfere with learning, reading, or development.

What Does a Pediatric Eye Exam Include?

At Southampton Optiks, we assess visual clarity, eye alignment, depth perception, and focusing ability all with age-appropriate techniques. We also check for amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye turn), and signs of myopia or astigmatism. Most exams are non-invasive and done with minimal equipment, no stress for you or your child.

The girl is wearing a pink shirt and is sitting in front of a desk with a monitor and other medical equipment. There is a window behind them with a view of the outside.

Compassionate Eye Care  Without the Intimidation

Our staff is trained to work with kids in a calm, reassuring way. We don’t rush. We explain everything. And we use kid-sized tools and visual charts designed for different developmental stages. Whether your child is shy or full of questions, we meet them at their level.

Early Detection Makes a Lifelong Difference

Many eye conditions, like myopia and amblyopia, are far easier to treat when caught early. Our team monitors for changes year to year and provides personalized treatment plans when needed, including glasses, patching, or myopia management. The earlier we start, the better the outcome.
